(Livonia, MI)  --  University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman says cutting funding to higher education would be devastating.  Coleman made the comments as she testified before the state Senate Appropriations Committee on Higher Education at Madonna University yesterday.  Officials from the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State all spoke about the importance of their collaboration in the University Research Corridor.  The alliance subsidizes start-up companies based on university research.  Governor Granholm's recommendation for the 2010-11 higher education budget is the lowest in the last ten years, with cuts of nearly 34-million-dollars.  University Research Corridor executive director Jeff Mason told the committee the alliance has created 165 start-up companies and is one of the largest employers in Michigan.
